Production Blog 3 for music video Band for Band
Polishing the vision adding the finishing touches on "Band for a Band"
By Alejandra Janeiro
At this point, wrapping up the "Band for a Band" music video, many of the broad issues morphed into the need to perfect minute details. For these last editing phases of my project, much more precision, imagination, and endurance were necessary than perhaps during any other time.
The biggest tasks were refining transitions so that the whole thing flowed well. I must have gone back through and changed keyframes, adding minor effects over and over until the high-energy parts hit when they should. In particular, it was a challenge synchronizing instrumental breaks with fast-paced visuals. I spent hours fiddling with cuts to make sure every beat is met with a precise camera movement or scene change to really bring Central Cee's rhythm to life visually.
I also graded color to make the video cinematic. While I had previously reached a darker, more urban tone, there were a few clips that still seemed inconsistent. This time around, I layered gradients and adjusted shadows and highlights much more delicately to give depth to nighttime scenes and sharpen details in daylight shots.
I added more graphics and text overlays to ensure that determination and ambition really bleed through the song for props and costume design. To illustrate, I included very quick flashes of graffiti-text at crucial lyrics; these give a pretty edgy visual that fits well with the vibe of Central Cee.
Perhaps the most fulfilling part was reading through all of my previous drafts' feedbacks. A friend recommended adding subtle slow-motion effects that would really drive in some dramatic points, and using this in a few areas really added an emotional weight I hadn't expected.
Through reflection in this stage of production, the smallest details may make all the difference to elevate your project from great to extraordinary. As we near completion with the final cut, there are feelings of pride and anticipation. I can't wait to see how audiences relate to "Band for a Band" and the story that we worked so hard to tell.
